So Much to Do

Today, as most days, I started out the day by filing away documents. In the morning, I went to help Evelyn take down the WWI exhibition in the School. It was quite interesting to see the way that they put together the exhibition. Instead of using a great deal of original objects, many objects, such as photographs and cards, were photocopied and recreated. This gave the visitor the chance to get closer with the objects and helped to preserve the originals.

While taking down the exhibit, Evelyn gave me some very helpful information on the preservation of textiles, which I had previously never learned. Tomorrow, we will begin the task of moving the objects back into their home locations, as well as editing their movement information. It is essential to ensure that each object is regarded as having been a part of this exhibit in the event that they decide to put up the exhibit again in the future.

After lunch, I began working with oral histories. First, I had to go through each recording and take down information on the interviewer and the interviewee. Next, I created a spreadsheet for the new oral histories. Finally, I actually began transcribing one of the oral histories. Needless to say, I have never practiced this and it proved more difficult than I had anticipated. In an hour, I only got through 13 minutes of the interview. Even though they are sometimes tedious, it is really exciting to hear the stories that people have to tell about New Lanark. Hopefully I can continue to listen to some of these histories as time goes by.
