One week has come and gone! This week has been quite interesting. I have managed to learn a great deal about the New Lanark World Heritage Site and meet most of the staff that work near me. Of course, I probably couldn't give you their names, but they will come with time.
Today, I began working with Evelyn on the research for an exhibition that will be going up in September. This exhibition, entitled Lifting the Lid, displays the history of food and drink in Scotland. This exhibit, originally created by the National Library of Scotland, requires some research on our part so that there is more information detailing food and drink in Lanarkshire and New Lanark. So far, it's been somewhat difficult to piece together much of anything...
While Robert Owen was extremely interested in creating more comfortable accommodations for the workers in New Lanark, he rarely discusses the food that he helped to provide for the people. Also, finding information that specifically discusses Lanarkshire has proven more difficult than I had anticipated. So far, I have found 3 books in the New Lanark Search Room and 2 books online via fUSIOn, the USI online search engine. For the most part, this information has been relatively common. Hopefully, as time goes by, I will be able to find a few more pieces that will allow me to get a jump on this research and really get going.
There is so much to do here in New Lanark and I'm starting to realize that 6 weeks is not much time at all. In the next 4.5 weeks, I will be working to archive objects in the search room, begin a project that will both benefit me and the site, assist in the de-installation of an exhibit, and perform a great deal of research for the next exhibit. Hopefully I can prove beneficial to New Lanark by getting a great deal done during my time.
This weekend, I will be traveling around Lanark, learning more about the area and enjoying the fresh air. Soon I will be finalizing my plans to travel into Glasgow, Edinburgh, and Sterling. I can't wait to see where the next 4.5 weeks take me and what I can get accomplished!
